Honda CR-V and Ram 1500 owners were among those most victimized by vehicle thefts over the last couple years in Guelph.

According to data from the Ministry of Transportation (MTO), acquired by Village Media, 13 of each of those vehicles were taken between Nov. 1, 2021, and Jan. 19 of this year.

The MTO data notes 301 vehicles were stolen in Guelph in the over two-year window.

MTO data is based on vehicles reported permanently stolen by owners – as in, owners have accepted they won’t see their vehicles again, and have filed an insurance claim and reported the loss of ownership.

It is in line with data released by the Equite Association last November. The report indicates both the Honda CR-V and Dodge Ram 1500 were by far the most popular vehicles for thieves in 2022 across the country.

The report said 5,620 Honda CR-Vs were stolen, and 2,600 Dodge RAM 1500’s. For contrast, the Ford F-150 was the third most frequent target last year, at 1,833.

The F-150 was the fourth most targeted vehicle in Guelph between Nov. 1, 2021 and Jan. 19, 2024, with 10 stolen, according to the MTO data.

Coming in third was the Toyota Highlander, with 11.

After that, there were five each of the following taken in that time: Chevrolet Silverado, Dodge Caravan, Honda Civic and Mazda3.

The MTO also reported four Chevrolet Suburbans, Ford F-250s, GMC Sierras, GMC Yukons, Jeep Wranglers, Lexus RX, Toyota Camrys and Toyota RAV4s stolen locally in the same time frame.

But no matter the model, the situation revolving around vehicle thefts isn’t getting better.

The Equite Association said historically high trends seen in 2022 continued into 2023.

A report released Tuesday said total thefts across Canada rose 0.6 per cent last year, with Ontario showing a year-over-year jump of 7.1 per cent.
