As temperatures drop, so does the air pressure in your tires. For every 10°C (18°F) decrease in temperature, tire pressure can drop by about 1-2 PSI (pounds per square inch). This happens because cold air becomes denser, reducing the volume inside the tire.
Driving with underinflated tires can lead to:
• Decreased Fuel Efficiency: Low pressure increases rolling resistance, making your engine work harder.
• Reduced Tire Lifespan: Uneven wear can shorten the life of your tires.
• Compromised Safety: Underinflated tires have less traction, especially on icy or wet roads, and can increase braking distances.
To stay safe, check your tire pressures regularly in cold weather, ideally once a month. Inflate them to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI, found in your vehicle’s manual or on the driver’s door frame.
