Guelph police have posted signs on Fountain Street to indicate a new buy and sell zone, with the goal of providing a safe space for locals to complete transactions.

Guelph police is providing a new space for anyone nervous about buying and selling items online.

The 'buy and sell zone' is located on Fountain Street, next to the police station, and marked by signs near the sidewalk.

“Those meeting new people while finalizing online transactions are encouraged to use the dedicated space to lessen the risk of becoming victims of robbery, theft or fraud while attempting to buy or sell property,” explained a Monday afternoon news release.

That release stresses police are not responsible for any transactions, and the space isn’t monitored.

If you can’t make it, police say to use public, well-lit areas to complete your transactions.

Sellers are also encouraged to only conduct business during the daytime, take someone with them or let someone know where you’re going, don’t complete the transaction through the mail, inspect property before handing money over and limit the amount of personal info you give out.
