A Guelph woman looking to invest in high-end watch sales was scammed out of $13,000, resulting in a fraud charge for an Ottawa man, say police.
The two began communicating last April, after the then-19-year-old woman responded to a social media post, a news release explains. When they met in-person about four months later, the man reportedly claimed to buy and re-sell high-end watches and invited the woman to invest.
During the next two months, she’s said to have transferred more than $13,000 to the man, without seeing any return of her supposed investment.
In December, an arrest warrant was issued for the man, who turned himself in to Guelph police on Thursday.
A 22-year-old Ottawa man is charged with fraud over $5,000.
