Guelph’s police chief is sending out an appeal to the public, one grounded in educating the public on the most pressing issues in the city and beyond.
Chief Gord Cobey told the Guelph Police Service Board Thursday there are a number of public information sessions upcoming on various topics.
The next one is coming March 20 around intimate partner violence and human trafficking.
It stems from an incident earlier this month where a Toronto man was arrested and charged with luring and sexual assault. This is in connection with an incident involving two 13-year-old Guelph girls who were reported missing.
The investigation revealed the two were taken to a local hotel by a man they met on social media.
“Tragically, these crimes are very present in our community,” Cobey said. “We will do everything possible to ensure a proactive, collaborative and effective approach to supporting victims and survivors, and we will hold offenders accountable.”
A session on internet child exploitation is coming on May 1, and one on frauds will happen later in the month. Further details on these events are still to come.
But in this, Cobey is looking to local community organizations to ask police about hosting a session.
“If there’s an event or topic that you would like us to present on, please ask because that’s literally what we’re for,” he said.
Cobey said more information can be found on the GPS’ community policing page.
