Closure 'forthcoming' for popular Highway 6 access point

Township staff said they'll proceed with the next steps surrounding the closure of Concession 1 at Highway 6 later this fall

PUSLINCH - A popular Highway 6 access point is set to close later this year in response to concerns about area safety and traffic.

According to a new update coming to Puslinch council for approval next week, the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has offered its support for closing Concession 1 at Highway 6 after staff met with representatives earlier this month.

The intersection is proposed to be replaced with a cul de sac.

Councillor Jessica Goyda originally suggested the idea late last year as a way to force drivers to take the Leslie Road intersection instead while improving traffic flow and safety.

In an emailed statement, the township's interim municipal clerk Justine Brotherson said the township can't confirm whether the road closure will occur as they are still in the process with relevant agencies.

"Once there is confirmation, public signage will be installed well in advance," said Brotherson.

The report said staff will proceed with the project's next steps later this fall and intend to post signage during the fall and winter months "to advise motorists of the forthcoming closure."

A bylaw to stop up and close the roadway section is planned for the fourth quarter of 2025 or the first quarter of 2026. Construction is planned for spring 2026.

In response to inquiries about installing a traffic light at Leslie Road and Highway 6, staff said the MTO advised the Concession 1 and Highway 6 closure would need to be implemented and a subsequent traffic count completed.

If the traffic count determines one is needed, the intersection would be placed on a list for implementation.

Seven collisions occurred at Concession 1 and Highway 6 in 2024; all resulted in property damage.
