The sexual misconduct case against a longtime youth volleyball referee is headed to trial next year.

Hughbee Brown of Dashwood, near Grand Bend, faces 14 charges in connection with incidents involving underage female volunteers in 2022.

According to court documents, a trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 15, 2024.

Details on evidence are protected under a publication ban.

At the time of Brown's arrest, Guelph police explained a number of female volunteers – aged 13 to 17 – reported inappropriate sexual conduct toward them by Brown. The alleged incidents happened at a high school volleyball tournament at the University of Guelph between May 2 and 4.

The investigation revealed a similar incident involving two 17-year-old female volunteers working at a volleyball game at an unnamed high school in Guelph March 29.

The now 64-year-old Brown is charged with seven counts of sexual assault, five counts of sexual exploitation and two counts of sexual interference.

Police said Brown worked as a youth volleyball referee for over 30 years.
