Two Guelph men face impaired driving charges following separate incidents Sunday morning.

Just before 5 a.m. police were called for a report of a possibly impaired driver near Imperial Road South and Ferman Drive. Officers arrived and located a man sitting in a running vehicle with his eyes closed. He was showing signs of impairment when he exited the vehicle, slurring his words and having difficulty understanding officers’ questions.

The driver was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 47-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired operation.

A few hours later, just after 10 a.m., police were called for a possible impaired driver near Willow Road and Silvercreek Parkway North. Officers located a pickup driving slowly through a parking lot with a large flag flying out the sunroof.

The vehicle was stopped and officers noted a strong odour of alcohol on the driver’s breath as well as slurred speech and other signs of impairment. The man was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

Investigation revealed the man was also required to have an ignition interlock on his vehicle – which he did not – as a result of an earlier impaired driving charge. A 50-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and driving while prohibited.

Both men had their licences suspended for 90 days and their vehicles impounded for seven days. They were released with upcoming court dates.
