Arrest in Thursday hit and run that left cyclist in critical condition

A cyclist was taken to hospital after being struck by a vehicle Thursday afternoon in front of the entrance to St. John Catholic Elementary School.

A Guelph man has been arrested in connection with a collision Thursday which left an elderly cyclist with life-threatening injuries.

At 1 p.m. emergency services were called to Victoria Road North in front of St. James Catholic High School. A woman in her 70s was riding southbound when she was struck by a Ford sedan. The driver of the sedan quickly left the scene without checking on the cyclist.

The cyclist was transported to a Hamilton trauma centre where she remains in critical condition.

The involved vehicle was located one hour after the collision parked at a residence west of downtown. Approximately 3:40 p.m. a man was located at an address in the east end and arrested.

A 35-year-old Guelph man is charged with failing to stop after an accident causing bodily harm. He will appear in court Oct. 18.

The collision remains under investigation. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken to police, or anyone with dashcam or home security footage of Victoria Road North between Cassino Avenue and Grange Road between 12:45 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. Thursday, to contact them at 519-993-5499 or by email at [email protected].
