A Guelph man has been arrested following an incident last month in which a car owner was allegedly dragged during a theft, Guelph police report.

Just before 8 a.m. June 19, police were called to a plaza near Kortright Road West and Ironwood Road. The victim reported he left his 2009 Mazda 3 running while he went into a store, and came out a short time later to see his vehicle being reversed from the parking spot. He grabbed onto the car and was dragged approximately three metres before falling to the ground, sustaining cuts and scrapes to his arms and legs.

A short time later the suspect entered a business near Woodlawn Road West and Silvercreek Parkway North and stole a welding kit. He was confronted by staff but left the business with the item and fled in the stolen Mazda.

The vehicle was recovered later the same day northeast of Mount Forest. It had been set on fire and was completely destroyed.

On Tuesday afternoon a 31-year-old was arrested. He is charged with motor vehicle theft, dangerous driving, three counts of driving while prohibited and theft under $5,000. He was held for a bail hearing.
