Guelph police laid two impaired driving charges during the annual Festive RIDE campaign, which wrapped up New Year's Eve.

Police spoke with more than 1,700 drivers during the annual Festive RIDE campaign, with two of them arrested for impaired driving and temporary licence suspensions issued in six cases.

The additional sobriety checkpoints were set up at various locations throughout the city between mid-November and New Year’s Eve.

In addition to charges laid against two drivers, six drivers blew a “warning” during roadside breath tests, indicating their blood/alcohol concentration ranged between 50 and 80 mg of alcohol in 100 mls of blood – the legal limit is 80.

Those warnings came with an automatic, three-day licence suspension.

“While the Festive RIDE program has been completed, road safety remains a key priority of the Guelph Police Service and our officers will continue to be on the lookout for impaired drivers throughout 2025,” a news release states.

“We encourage the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home.

“Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.”
