A member of Heritage Guelph is proposing five University of Guelph buildings be given heritage designation.

Alexandre Krucker, is bringing forward a motion looking to have Day Hall, J.D. MacLachlan building, War Memorial Hall, O.A.C. Centennial Arboretum Centre and McLaughlin Library be designated. The motion doesn’t explain why he wants the buildings to be designated but shows what heritage designation criteria the buildings could meet. Krucker's report is in the Heritage Guelph committee agenda and its Thursday meeting.

Four of the buildings are in critical condition and one is in poor condition, according to a report that was presented to the University of Guelph's Board of Governors meeting last month.

Day Hall at 99 Trent Ln. was built in 1895. Krucker thinks it meets eight of nine criteria for designation. The criteria is set by the province under the Ontario Heritage Act.

The J.D. MacLachlan building was built in 1902. Krucker thinks it meets eight of nine designation criteria.

Krucker's report noted the university’s list of buildings and conditions. It also made addendums to some of the properties like the D.M. Rutherford Family Conservatory, noting the “conservatory is likely to be demolished.”

Last month crews began preparatory work for the deconstruction of the conservatory which will take four to six weeks.

The U of G is opposing city council’s decision to designate the conservatory where it identified salvageable steel from the frame of the building be conserved. Council is set to discuss the objection during a planning meeting on Tuesday.
