Temporary measures are being implemented along Stone Road East while McQuillan’s Bridge remains closed.
The historic bridge was closed until further notice on Jan. 29 for public safety, with the city noting the bridge could no longer support public use.
Temporary barriers were erected on the bridge, and pedestrians travelling in the area are asked to exercise caution, not use the bridge and instead use an alternative route.
As of Tuesday, temporary measures are being implemented along Stone Road East to improve pedestrian mobility in the area, including installing concrete jersey barriers and adding flashing pedestrian warning signs and speed radar boards.
The speed limit will also be reduced to 40 km/h for about 600 metres on Stone Road East between Victoria Road South and Watson Parkway South. Lanes will be shifted, and cyclists will share the road with vehicles near the bridge.
Those changes will remain until at least the spring, according to Terry Gayman, the city’s general manager of engineering.
"The city is reviewing longer-term options for mobility in the area over the coming months," he said in an email.
In the meantime, pedestrians can walk between the concrete barriers and guard rails once the barriers are fully installed; crews were on-site today to begin the installation. Gayman said the city anticipates it will be completed tomorrow.
