A 52-year-old man is in custody following an early morning standoff at the Parkiew Motel Tuesday morning.
The incident started around 4 a.m. when police attempted to stop a white Dodge Charger in the city's south end that did not have a licence plate, said Guelph Police spokesperson Josh Fraser.
The vehicle sped off and was not pursued by police out of concern for public safety.
Shortly after that police received a call of a man brandishing a knife at the Parkview Motel on Marilyn Drive between Woolwich Street and Riverside Park.
Police attended and located what was believed to be the same car that had sped away from police earlier.
A man came out of a motel room and brandished a knife at police before retreating into the room and barricading himself in, Fraser said.
"At this time we learned the identity of the male and that he was wanted in Peel Region in connection with a break-and-enter," Fraser said.
Police also believe the car may have been stolen.
The police tactical squad and canine unit were called in and surrounded the motel room.
After roughly four and a half hours the man peacefully exited the room and was taken into custody.
The man was taken to Guelph General Hospital where he was medically cleared and remains in custody as police continue their investigation.
