Two pet birds died in an early Thursday morning fire on Grange Street, though another pet made it out, say local fire officials.
The fire was reported shortly before 4:45 a.m. in a second storey unit at 130 Grange St. The resident escaped unharmed, said Guelph Fire Department deputy chief Steven Goode, adding they've been displaced due to fire and smoke damage.
The unit below also sustained water damage, he added.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
There were no reported human injuries and no one was taken to hospital, the deputy chief noted.
"Early notification is key," Goode said, explaining there were 133 fire-related fatalities throughout the province last year, with another 66 in the first seven months of 2023. "It's very concerning."
By law, there must be a working smoke alarm on every level of residences.
