Ring in the New Year by checking out a building not always open to the public.
The Artillery Support Group is hosting it's annual New Year's Levée inside the officer's mess hall at the Guelph Armoury (7 Wyndham St. S.) from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
It's considered a long tradition in the Canadian Forces, and is mainly considered a Canadian observance, though levées are also held in other parts of the world.
"The fact of having levées is an old custom," Ret. Col. Gary Burton, the chairman of the artillery support group, told GuelphToday in Jan. 2023. "It would've started with the land owners would have all their people come to their big house and be fed, and participate on New Year's Day."
Burton said it is important for military to be seen connecting with citizens, and opening the doors gives people an opportunity to see the inside of a building not everyone gets to access.
Parking is available. There will be a cash bar, and food will be served.
There is a dress code too. A business suit and tie, or a cocktail dress or trousers are required.
