The Wellington Catholic District School Board warns some schools may close after Friday if it is unreasonable to operate due to health and safety concerns.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) represents about 60 caretakers and maintenance workers who work in WCDSB schools, with exceptions in Wellington County, St. Joseph, Fergus, Elora, St. Mary, Mount Forest, St. John, and Arthur.

“We deeply respect and value our CUPE staff and honour the collective bargaining process,” said WCDSB in a press release.

Schools not affected would remain open.

WCDSB schools and before and after school programs will remain open on Nov. 4.

“If schools are required to close, instruction will be provided through remote, online learning until our schools are available to re-open. Schools will be in contact with families who may require devices this week and further information regarding online learning will be provided as necessary,” continued in the release.

The caretakers and maintenance staff work to maintain the school, ensure cleanliness of classrooms and washrooms, building security and health and safety concerns.

As for the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB), they will do their best to ensure UGDSB schools and programs remain open, said in a UGDSB press release.

The UGDSB has 224 permanent caretakers and maintenance staff.

“Despite the efforts of UGDSB management and non-unionized this will become very difficult without our valued CUPE staff,” continued in the press release.
