An Uber Eats driver faces several charges, including flight from police, after allegedly fleeing a RIDE spot check on Saturday.

Police were running a sobriety check point at Wellington and Gordon streets at about 9:25 p.m. when an officer reportedly spotted an open beer can in a cup holder and directed the driver to pull over into a nearby parking lot.

The driver allegedly fled at a high rate of speed, squealing their tires as they swerved around other vehicles and headed southbound on Gordon. An officer attempted to pull the driver over, but they continued at a high speed.

A suspect was found in the parking lot of their residence a short time later and arrested, police said in a news release.

A 42-year-old Guelph man is charged with dangerous driving, flight from police and driving with open alcohol.

Police are investigating after another motorist fled from a second RIDE check in an unrelated incident later on Saturday.

At about 11:40 p.m. police were running a RIDE check on Victoria Road South near Arkell Road. The driver of a white pickup truck made a U-turn before the checkpoint and fled.

An officer briefly pursued the truck but called it off in the interest of public safety.
