Guelph wrestler one step away from training with top WWE star

Kc Spinelli will compete next month for a chance to win $10,000 and three months of training at the Nightmare Factory in Atlanta, co-owned by Cody Rhodes

She's wrestled all over the world. She's taken bumps in professional wrestling's biggest promotions.

But now a Guelph-born wrestler has her eyes set on a major opportunity to train with some of the best the industry has to offer.

Natalie Harrison – better known as Kc Spinelli – is in the finals of Wrestling Academy 2023, a Quebec-based wrestling competition.

Three winners will receive a $10,000 cash prize and three months of training at the Nightmare Factory wrestling school in Atlanta, co-owned by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) superstar Cody Rhodes.

"My eyes are definitely set on going to this school," the 38-year-old told GuelphToday. "Learning from not only Cody Rhodes, there's the Gunns that train there, even (All Elite Wrestling star and Canadian Shawn) Spears comes over and trains there.

"Everybody will come, everybody will share knowledge. That's what excites me about this is that, just the growth and all the learning that's possible."

Spinelli's final hurdle is a one-on-one battle with Winnipeg-based wrestler Kat Von Heez Sept. 17 in Quebec.

But how the winner is chosen is not as simple as winning the match.

The competition is run by Jacques Rougeau, who is best known for his time in the then-World Wrestling Federation as The Mountie, and one half of The Quebecers tag team.

AEW star and Nightmare Factory co-owner Q.T. Marshall partnered with Rougeau, and is the one deciding who advances to the next round.

"It's a huge thing because there's so many networks that he comes along with," Spinelli said.

"He doesn't really know any of us, so he can't really play favourites. He's very much looking for who he thinks would be the best fit to get this opportunity."

Spinelli is in one of three matches, and one from each match will be selected as winners.

Thus far, Spinelli has impressed in both a tag team match and a triple threat match over the last few months.

Now with a 50 per cent chance to win, Spinelli admits there are some nerves.

"One thing that I had going in my other matches against the women I wrestled was experience," she said.

"I have a lot more experience than anybody I stepped in the ring with yet. But now with Kat, we've almost been wrestling the same amount of time. I think I'm close to 15 years, and I want to say Kat's just over 10 (years experience)."

Spinelli said she knows Kat is ready. And Spinelli seems ready too, going all in on the competition, not taking other bookings and focusing both her body and mind to the task at hand.

"I took a pretty bad elbow to the shoulder in the match on Sunday, so all my shoulder is pretty much black and blue right now," she said with a laugh.

Bruises are par the course for Spinelli, who has had a passion for wrestling since her childhood in Guelph.

"I used to tell (my high school wrestling) coach (Mr. Wilson) all the time that I was doing this because I was training to be a WWE superstar," the College Heights Secondary School alum said.

Back then, she fell in love with wrestling through TV, with not as many local shows available.

Nowadays, Spinelli said pro wrestling shows are huge in the Guelph and area, and is encouraging families to go check out a show.

"If you have a young child, and your young child likes acting or sports or is involved and watches wrestling on a daily basis," she said. "Google search what kind of local wrestling is happening in your area and take them out."

Spinelli said it can change a child's world.

And you never know. That child could come away from a show with the passion to travel the world and wrestle in front of audiences big and small.

It worked for Spinelli. She's competed in matches across Canada, as well as the United States, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Pakistan and Holland.

She's made appearances on television with WWE, AEW and Impact, and has learned from names synonymous with wrestling's past and present.

But next month, a big opportunity is on the line.

And with a bit of adrenaline in her soul, Spinelli is determined to seize it.
