NEWS RELEASE
GUELPH-WELLINGTON WOMEN IN CRISIS
************************
February is Human Trafficking Awareness Month in Canada. In recognition, Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis is hosting a panel discussion with several of its partner agencies to raise awareness about the local impacts of human trafficking and the actions individuals and communities can take to support survivors.
According to the most recent StatsCan report, rates of human trafficking in Ontario are “well above the national average.” This report names the 5 cities in Canada with the highest numbers of police-reported incidents of human trafficking: Toronto tops the list at #1 and London ranks #5. The 401 between them is the biggest human trafficking corridor in Canada, and so, it’s more urgent than ever for our community to understand how trafficking works and how to help people in our lives who are affected by it.
The community is invited to join us, along with the Guelph Police Service, Elora House and WomenatthecentrE, for a panel discussion on the theme of “Wrapping Around: Mobilizing Our Community to Support Survivors of Human Trafficking.” The event will take place Feb. 19 from 12-1:30 p.m. at 10C (42 Carden St.).
This free event is for anyone who supports folks who are at risk of or who experience trafficking, either professionally or personally. Find the link to register on our events page: https://gwwomenincrisis.org/event/human-trafficking-awareness-month-panel-discussion-event/.
