Guelph's newest grocery store is ready to open its doors.
The Longos on Clair Road opens to the public at 7 a.m. Wednesday morning. The first 500 customers that day will receive a mystery gift card valued at between $5 and $500.
The official opening takes place at 8:45.
At 40,000 square feet, the Longos is a little smaller than some of the traditional grocery stores in town, but Director of Consumer Promotions Rob Koss said that the store specializes in fresh food, unique items and quality service.
He said that when the family-owned company was looking to expand beyond its traditional Greater Toronto market, Guelph fit the demographic for its 32nd store.
"Our target customer is highly educated, they travel and they're very food focused," said Koss.
"We're not as big as some of the other stores, but we're very food focused. It's really about that quality," Koss said.
Longos carries its own brands of several products and offers others that can't be found in other supermarkets.
There is a bakery, deli, hot meals that include wood oven pizza, stand that sells fresh out of the oven chocolate chip cookies and a large beer selection. Longo does not sell wine.
The store will employ 180 full and part-time employees.
The store is located at 24 Clair Rd. S., on the southwest corner of the Clair Road/Gordon Street intersection.
It is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends.
