Whether you’re a seasoned gym rat or someone working out for the first time, the motivation is the same; feeling better and living a healthier lifestyle. Getting started for newbies is often the hardest part. And workout routine fatigue is a plateau that everyone runs into at some point.

What if there was a way to combat both problems in a fun and exciting workout plan that only takes 30 minutes a day? Meet 9Round Kickboxing Fitness; Guelph’s instructor-led full-body circuit training program fitness centre.

30 minutes, 9 stations, 3 minutes at a time

Founded by world kickboxing champion Shannon “The Cannon” Hudson, 9Round takes the foundations of kickboxing but weaves them into high-intensity interval training. It’s a full-body 30 minute workout that jumps from nine different three-minute “rounds” that focus on punching, kicking, cardio and weights.

J.L. Morrison is the owner of 9Round in Guelph and along with her business partner Steve Mendoza, they’re training their members through unique workouts every day. Their goal is to make their members stronger in 30 minutes, both physically and mentally.

“When they’re here, we’re guiding them the whole time,” Morrison said. “We’re motivating them. We guide them through the workout. It’s like having a personal trainer, but at a fraction of the cost. Every single round is different every single day. They will never ever do the same workout twice. So it’s fun and engaging, so they don’t get bored.”

There aren’t any set class times, so members can drop in anytime during business hours to get their workout in. Since rounds are switching every three minutes, people can jump in anytime and get their sweat on.

“It’s a lot more fun working out at 9Round because you don’t have to think,” Morrison said. “You don’t have to make up your workouts. You don’t have to worry about overusing your muscles because it’s all laid out for you. The menu is different every single day.”

It’s not just about kickboxing, it’s about being healthy and staying strong

First-time members who may have stereotypes about the program found out quickly how accessible the program is. Despite its roots in kickboxing, it doesn’t require supreme athletic coordination or an elite fitness level to join in. 9Round is about making fitness fun for all.

“People get afraid of the word kickboxing and they don’t realize you can be 80 years old and you can come to this gym,” Morrison said. “You can be 10 years old and you can come to this gym. You can be 350 pounds and come to this gym. You can have Parkinson’s, you can have cancer, you can be in a wheelchair, you can be pregnant. You can be anybody and come to this gym. It’s a gym for anyone and everyone.”
