'Severe' thunderstorm can develop tornado: Environment Canada

Severe thunderstorm warning in effect for:

  • Guelph - Erin - Southern Wellington County
  • Kitchener - Cambridge - Region of Waterloo
  • Mount Forest - Arthur - Northern Wellington County

At 5:31 p.m. EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts and heavy rain.

This line of severe thunderstorms is located from Kenilworth to Staffa, moving east at 55 km/h.

Hazard:
90 km/h wind gusts. A tornado is also possible.

Impacted locations include:
Stratford, Mitchell, Elmira, Milverton, Wellesley, Linwood, Drayton and Alma.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
