WELLINGTON COUNTY – A study commissioned by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has a recommended strategy to improve a sometimes dangerous Highway 6 intersection between Guelph and Fergus.
A transportation environmental study report for the Highway 6 and Wellington Road 22/Eighth Line intersection recommends constructing a “modern roundabout” designed to accommodate both farm equipment and tractor trailers along with revisions to the roads’ alignment, new median islands with curb and gutter, new illumination, rehabilitation of the Cox Creek culvert and other improvements to safety and visibility.
The report said the intersection requires improvements to “address the safety concerns and geometric deficiencies associated with the intersection operations. Specific issues identified include safety-related concerns such as visibility, speeding and turning movements.”
When evaluating different options, the report said the modern roundabout was chosen because it has the lowest permanent environment impacts, lower property requirements, highest safety improvement, least complex construction staging and lowest construction cost.
The report said this design will require six permanent property acquisitions and three property entrances will require relocation.
