A waste collection truck snagged overhead wires in the area of Clair Road West and Gosling Gardens on Thursday morning, pulling down two traffic signal poles.

When a waste collection truck pulled down overhead wires in the city’s south end on Thursday morning, it cut off internet, home and cable services for many Guelphites, confirms a spokesperson for Rogers communications.

Residents began posting about the outage on social media soon after the 6:30 a.m. incident along Clair Road West, near Gordon Street. In pulling down the wires, two street traffic light poles were toppled and utility poles may have been damaged.

Police anticipate that section of Clair Road West will remain closed for several hours.

“Our technical team re-routed traffic and the majority of customers are back online, as the team continues to work to restore services for all customers as soon as possible,” reads the statement from Rogers. “We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and will keep them updated on our progress.”

Full restoration of services is expected by 10 p.m. Thursday.

GuelphToday asked the Rogers spokesperson how many customers were impacted by the outage, but that question was not answered.
