Police seek armed suspect following Stone Road bank robbery (UPDATED)

Man with a gun fled with undisclosed quantity of cash, say police

Police are looking for an armed suspect following a bank robbery on Stone Road West early Friday evening.

A man with a firearm entered the bank at about 5:20 p.m. and demanded money from employees, states a Guelph Police Service news release. He fled with an undisclosed quantity of cash.

No physical injuries were reported.

There was a heavy police presence around the CIBC branch near Scottsdale Drive, across from Stone Road Mall (in the plaza with Staples and McDonald's).

Ryan Laurie took a short video of the scene early in the investigation and shared it with GuelphToday.

Police initially tweeted an advisory for the public to avoid the area, but called it off a couple hours later.

Among several police vehicles still at the scene at 7:30 p.m. was a Halton Police canine unit. Several police officers were inside the CIBC branch.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male with an average build. At the time of the robbery, he was wearing a black hoodie, black pants, black boots and carrying a tan-coloured backpack.

Anyone with information about the suspect or the incident is asked to call Sgt. Phil Perrins of Guelph Police Service General Investigation and Special Projects Unit at 519824-1212 ext. 7336 or email him at [email protected].
