According to a report going to the Guelph Police Services Board Thursday, the service said it ended 2022 with a budget surplus of $2,170,000.
It goes on to recommend most of the money go to three reserve funds: the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board reserve fund, the police operating contingency reserve and the police capital reserve fund.
The report asks that $260,000 of the surplus go to support a supplemental staffing initiative being proposed for the downtown core, another item the board will discuss during Thursday's meeting.
The request to allocate funding must go to the city treasurer for approval.
Many of the operating measures in 2022 came within budget or had a surplus.
The only item in the report showing a deficit was paid overtime. The report said the service paid out $90,000 over what it budgeted in 2022.
The report is a preliminary look at the year-end operating and capital budget. Final results will be brought to the board during July's meeting.
