Guelph Jazz Festival kicks off five days of music Wednesday evening

A number of free shows are part of the festival, including a full day free of performances in Market Square on Saturday

A performance at Guelph Little Theatre on Wednesday kicks off five days of creative music and programming for the 25th anniversary Guelph Jazz Festival and Colloquium.

The lead-off performance SUNG RA is an interpretation of the compositions of Sun Ra by Ottawa spate Rakestar Arkestra.

The two-set concert begins at 8 p.m. On Wednesday Sept. 12 at Guelph Little Theatre. Tickets for that performance are $15 general admission, $10 for students, seniors, and the under-waged.

On Thursday, a noon-hour free concert by pianist Agustí Fernández will be presented at University of Guelph’s Mackinnon Building. 

At 8 p.m. on Thursday, a double bill of Amirtha Kidambi’s Elder Ones and Nick Fraser Quartet with Tony Malaby will play River Run Centre. Tickets for that performance are $25 general or $20 for students, seniors and the under-waged.

A free show in Guelph’s Market Square starting at 7 p.m. on Friday is called The Friday Night Street Music Party and will feature the Shuffle Demons, Heavyweights Brass Band, Samba Squad, and the Surefire Street Band. 

Earlier in the day Friday, a free panel discussion will be held at 4 p.m. at Silence, featuring Amirtha Kidambi, Thanya Iyer, Darius Jones, Emilie Lesbros and moderated by Kevin McNeilly.

On Saturday, the Market Square stage features free shows starting from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m., including: KidsAbility Youth Ensemble, Guelph Youth Jazz Ensemble, Thanya Iyer, James Brandon Lewis Trio and DJ Shut, among others.

At 10:30 a.m. On Saturday, William Parker solo performs at Royal City Church. Tickets for that performance are $20 or $15 for students, seniors and the under-waged.

At 2 p.m., a double bill of Marielle Groven, Aaron Lumley & Jasper Stadhouders, as well as Satoko Fujii’s This Is It! will play Cooperators Hall at River Run Centre. Tickets are $25 general or $20 for students, seniors and the under-waged.

On Sunday, a double bill of Hübsch Martel Zoubek and Marilyn Lerner & Nicole Rampersaud: Brass Knuckle Sandwich play the Guelph Music Centre. Tickets are $25 or $20 for students, seniors and the under-waged.

The final performance of the festival will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday, when Allison Cameron & Ben Grossman perform at Silence. Tickets for that performance are $15 general or $10 for students, seniors and the under-waged.
