A former deputy police chief has died.

Don ‘Doc’ Porterfield died last Thursday at the age of 72 after a lengthy battle with progressive supranuclear palsy.

Porterfield spent 34 years with the Guelph Police Service, beginning as a cadet in 1971.

Guelph police say he served in “nearly every branch of the service.” In 2001, he was appointed deputy chief, a position he served in until his retirement four years later.

“His contributions to the service and community are immeasurable,” police stated in a news release.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Darlene, as well as his three children, nine grandchildren and three siblings.

His family legacy still lives on within the police profession. His son Darryl is an OPP sergeant and daughter-in-law Lindsay is a constable with Guelph police.

“He cherished the lifelong friendships he made throughout his career and in various roles,” his obituary reads. “He loved his community and making it a better place.

“The legacy he leaves behind him is immeasurable.”

A celebration of life is being held March 8 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Guelph Country Club.
