Visitors be warned, there are coyotes hunting at The Arboretum.

Two have been spotted hunting during the day in the past couple weeks, reads a Thursday afternoon social media post from The Arboretum, which goes on to remind people not to let their dogs run free.

“The coyotes are shy and have not had any interactions with anyone, but we wanted to remind everyone that dogs in The Arboretum MUST BE ON A LEASH,” the post states. “We've received some feedback recently about dog owners letting their dogs off-leash, hollering at them across the grounds, and not picking up their poop (Yuck!).”

A request for further comment from The Arboretum was not immediately returned.

Coyotes are primarily carnivorous animals that feed on rabbits, rodents, birds, reptiles and more, including smaller dogs. They live mainly in forested areas and grasslands.

In addition to dog safety, the leash rule is in effect for numerous reasons, including protection of the plants, trees and delicate understory in the internationally accredited, curated collection. Protection of wildlife is another key reason.

“Every person should be able to visit, whether or not they have (or even like) being around dogs,” the post notes. “Everyone who comes to The Arboretum can expect dogs to be on leash and under control.”
