ABERFOYLE – A Puslinch councillor wants the County of Wellington to establish a community safety zone in Aberfoyle.

At Wednesday’s Puslinch council meeting, John Sepulis put forward a motion to be considered at the next meeting to request the county designate a stretch of Brock Road as a community safety zone.

Community safety zones are intended as a deterrent against aggressive driving and speeding as fines are doubled.

At their last meeting, county council passed a motion directing staff to bring a report back on if they should establish county-wide community safety zones as well as how the process should work for member municipalities to request them.

This report is expected by the end of January.

In the meantime, Sepulis’ motion is requesting the county to consider designating Brock Road, between Wellington Road 34 and Gilmore Road, as a community safety zone once approved at the county level.

This highway is under the jurisdiction of the County of Wellington.

Brock Road, or Wellington Road 46, is the main road through Aberfoyle. The motion notes that Aberfoyle Public School, a library, a community centre, private homes and others front onto this road.

Speeding and aggressive driving have been noted as a particular problem in Puslinch.

Repeated complaints on Lake Road and other areas has prompted the township to work towards a transportation master plan on a standard way to deal with these issues.

The motion will be considered at Puslinch’s Oct. 21 council meeting.
