A Guelph man faces weapons charges after he was arrested Thursday as part of an initiative targeting open drug use in the downtown core, say Guelph police.

Just before 11 a.m. officers were patrolling on Quebec Street when they observed a male smoking from a pipe close to pedestrians walking by. He was placed under arrest and the pipe containing suspected methamphetamine was seized.

During a search of the male, officers located two spring-assisted knives, including one which had been modified so the blade remained open with elastic ties. Investigation revealed he is bound by a court-imposed weapons prohibition.

A 25-year-old Guelph man is charged with possessing a controlled substance and two counts each of carrying a concealed weapon and unauthorized possession of a weapon.
