One arrested after stolen truck catches fire

While investigating the fire, officers spotted another stolen truck which fled the scene

TOWNSHIP OF CENTRE WELLINGTON – On July 26, 2020 at approximately 1:45 p.m., members of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a truck fire on Guelph-Nichol Townline in Guelph-Eramosa Township. It was discovered that the truck had been reported stolen on July 25, 2020 in Oxford County.  

As officers were investigating the first incident, they spotted a second stolen pickup truck not far from the original scene. Police attempted to stop the stolen vehicle on Conservation Road in Guelph-Eramosa Township, but the driver fled the scene.   

At approximately 6 p.m., police responded to a report of a suspicious person in the area of the Eramosa-Garafraxa Townline in Centre Wellington Township. Upon arrival, two suspects fled on foot and police recovered the second stolen truck.  

Uniform officers set up containment and searched the area with the assistance of the Wellington County OPP Canine Unit, the Emergency Response Team (ERT) and an OPP Aviation Services helicopter. Following a lengthy search, one suspect was located and taken into custody without incident. A second suspect remains outstanding. At this time, there is believed to be no threat to public safety.  

Alexis Reilly, 36 years old, of Sarnia has been charged with:

  • Flight from police,
  • Possession of property obtained by a crime,
  • Fail to comply with probation order; and
  • Driving while under suspension 

The accused was held for a bail hearing.
