A Guelph man faces impaired driving charges following a hit and run collision early Wednesday.

Approximately 2:50 a.m. police say a witness reported a vehicle had struck a sign at York Road and Wyndham Street South and came to rest in the park before driving away from the area.

Officers located the heavily-damaged vehicle stopped near Downey Road and Niska Road with one of its front tires missing. They spoke to the driver who had a strong odour of alcohol on his breath, was unsteady on his feet and was wearing his sweater inside out.

He was arrested and transported to the police station, where he refused several times to provide a breath sample. A 21-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving, refusing to provide a breath sample and failing to remain at a collision. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.
