The 2023 police-reported crime statistics were released this week by Statistics Canada and show Guelph continues to be a safe community for our citizens.

The annual Crime Severity Index (CSI) rankings place the Guelph Census Metropolitan Area at eighth-lowest nationally, and fourth lowest in Ontario.

This is an improvement from 12th lowest a year earlier and Guelph’s best overall ranking since 2015.

The Crime Severity Index looks at both the number and relative severity of police-reported crimes.

In 2023, Guelph’s Violent CSI decreased by two per cent, while our overall CSI – which considers both violent and non-violent crimes – decreased by seven per cent from a year earlier. For comparison, overall CSI last year increased by 3.5 per cent provincially and 2.15 per cent nationally.

“These favourable trends in all areas represent excellent progress for our citizens and are a testament to the hard work of our members in conjunction with our community partners,” said Guelph Police Chief Gord Cobey. “The data continues to demonstrate the success of the investments made to secure the safety of our citizens and the wellness of our members. As one of Canada’s fastest-growing communities, we are committed to ensuring our city remains safe, healthy and future-ready.”

“We thank the community and the Guelph Police Services Board for their ongoing support as we endeavour to make Guelph the safest community in Canada,” Cobey added.
