The following news releases were issued today by the Guelph Police Service:
Shoplifting investigation leads to numerous charges
On March 30, 2020 at 5:46 p.m., [it is alleged that] an adult male shoplifted $368.76 worth of merchandise from a store located near the intersection of Woodlawn Road West and Woolwich Street in the City of Guelph. The merchandise included an air mattress, a red camping backpack, a Nerf gun and action figures.
On April 4 at 3 p.m., [it is alleged that] the male shoplifted over $100 worth of merchandise from a store located near the intersection of Woolwich Street and Speedvale Avenue West, placing the merchandise in a red camping backpack before leaving the store. The merchandise included cosmetics and fragrances.
At 3:03 p..m, police located the male and he was subsequently arrested. A search incident to arrest revealed the stolen property, and two membership cards and a rewards card not in the male’s name.
The male was charged with:
• Theft under $5,000
• Possession of stolen property x3
• Breach probation
He was held in custody pending a bail hearing on April 5, and later released with a court date of June 16.
At the time of the April 4 arrest, it was unknown that this male was [allegedly] the same person who committed the thefts on March 30. Further investigation revealed that it was in fact the same male, and the red camping backpack utilized on April 4 was the same backpack that was stolen on March 30.
On April 17, police located the male near the intersection of Speedvale Avenue East and Stevenson Street North, and he was subsequently arrested.
A 37-year-old Guelph male has been additionally charged with:
• Theft under $5,000
• Possession of property obtained by crime
• Breach probation x2
• Fail to comply with a release order
He will appear in court on June 16.
Residential garage break-in
Some time between 5 p.m. on April 15 and 7:30 a.m. on April 16, 2020, the garage of a residence located near the intersection of Kathleen Street and Speedvale Avenue West in the City of Guelph was entered. A CCM Alpha dual suspension mountain bike (valued at $324.99) was taken. Entry was gained as the garage door was left open.

Hit and run investigation
Some time between 4 p.m. on April 15 and 10:43 a.m. on April 16, 2020, a vehicle parked out front of a residence located near the intersection of Cardigan Street and Woolwich Street in the City of Guelph was hit. The front left bumper was damaged and the headlight was smashed. The driver of the responsible vehicle did not remain at the scene, nor did they report the collision.
