Large quantities of cigarettes were stolen and significant damage caused during a pair of convenience store break-ins on Sunday morning.
“It is not known if they are related,” states a police news release.
At about 2 a.m., police were called to a business in the area of Arkell Road and Victoria Road South. An employee had responded to an alarm call and found the front window smashed and drawers on the sidewalk outside.
Surveillance video reportedly showed three males arrive in a white Jeep. One had a sledgehammer or similar object which was used to smash the front window. The cigarette cabinet was broken into and the drawers were removed so their contents could be emptied into the Jeep.
An ATM was also broken into and an unknown quantity of cash removed, police say.
Just after 9 a.m. police were called to a business in the area of Fife Road and Elmira Road South after an employee arrived to discover a break-in.
At about 1 a.m. the front door was pried open and a padlock cut off an internal security gate, police said. Several shelves of cigarettes were emptied and significant damage caused to the counter to access the store’s safe.
