Guelph Storm coach Scott Walker is stepping away from the team to deal with some ongoing health issues.

In a phone interview, Walker made it clear that the health concerns are serious, but not critical.

He said they are an extension of the health concerns that started in Vancouver when he was an assistant coach with the Canucks but had to step away, namely vertigo linked to blood pressure issues.

Associate coach Chad Wiseman takes over as head coach.

"It's serious and for my health I need to step down right now, but i'm not dying," Walker said. "In the big picture, I'm going to be fine. I'll come up to the rink when I can and if Chad or George (Burnett) want to pick my brain, they can. I'm available to help and I still want to be a presence and help the players in any way I can.

"My level of involvement as the season goes on will depend on my health."

He said when symptoms flare up, like they did during the recent back-to-back games, it not only puts his health at risk but also makes it unfair on the team if he's there for a period of time, then has to stay away from the rink for periods.

"It's disappointing that I can't go right not, but I'm not willing to disappear on the team all the time. That's not fair to the coaches or the players," Walker said.

"It's disappointing because it's so early in the season and I was really enjoying it. But it won't be a great upheaval."

Walker remains as co-owner and team president.

Wiseman is in his fifth year with the club, joining them in 2018-2019.

“Although the circumstances are unfortunate, I am excited for the opportunity to lead our group and continue to help develop and prepare our athletes for the next level," Wiseman said in a press release. "I would like to thank GM George Burnett and the entire ownership group for putting their trust in me to lead this young group.”

Guelph hosts the Flint Firebirds on Friday.
