With the Guelph Nighthawks still in the hunt for a playoff spot, they released one of their best players on Saturday.
Myck Kabongo, who was second on the team in scoring, second in rebounds, first in assists and second in steals, was let go.
"Prior to the Guelph Nighthawks transaction deadline at 7 p.m. on Saturday the club formally released Myck Kabongo. With the acquisition of four new players prior to the transaction deadline coach Kissi felt it would be best to provide Myck his release and allow him to pursue opportunities to secure a starting role with another club," said the team in an email to GuelphToday.
The Nighthawks split their last two games, including a 99-84 loss to the Edmonton Stingers Saturday night at the Sleeman Centre.
They fell to 4-11 on the season and sit tied for fifth in the six-team Canadian Elite Basketball League standings.
With five games remaining they could still make the playoffs as they are only four points behind the Saskatchewan Rattlers, who hold the fourth and final playoff spot.
A four-team championship weekend will be held in Saskatoon to determine the new league's first ever champion.
Kimbal Mackenzie was named player of the game for the Nighthawks Saturday, finishing with 21 points and five assists. Xavier Moon was the leading scoring for the Stingers, finishing with 20 points and 10 assists.
Last Thursday the Nighthaws beat Saskatcheway 93-75 in Saskatoon, the first win under new head coach Charles Kissi.
Connor Wood was named player of the game for the Nighthawks for his record-setting performance, finishing with 29 points, five rebounds and three assists. Kimbal Mackenzie was second on the team in scoring with 19 points, while Olu Famutimi finished with 14.
The Nighthawks are in action again on July 27 as they host the league-leading Niagara River Lions.
