This past weekend a sprinkler head broke in Guelph General Hospital’s Emergency Department. The resultant flooding damaged a significant portion of the department and officials are still assessing its full extent.

Although the hospital will continue to provide high quality emergency care, those coming to the department can anticipate much longer waits than usual.

Approximately 20 per cent of the department has been taken out of service for at least three weeks to be restored. Affected areas include four treatment rooms, five seated patient areas and two hallway spaces.

"The timing couldn’t be worse with the busy holiday season approaching," says Karen Suk-Patrick, VP People and Support Services. “We are asking for extra patience and understanding from those coming to our Emergency Department. Our staff are doing the best they can given difficult circumstances. It may take longer but they will continue to provide the high quality care for which Guelph General Hospital is known.”
