Ward 5 incumbent councillors Leanne Caron and Cathy Downer are "relieved" to have been re-elected after the ward boundary changed, bringing in lots of new voters.
Now, they're ready to get back to work.
"I'm really looking forward to meeting the new councillors and getting to know them and hear their ideas," said Downer, who first served on city council from 1994 to 2006 and has been one of the reigning Ward 5 councillors since 2014.
Caron agreed, and said she's "ready to hit the ground running."
"A lot of the initiatives underway right now have been long-term, and are coming to a head during this term of council," she said. "Like climate change, which needs to be addressed sooner than later. We need to come together and be very clear with the community, about what that cohesive vision looks like. And we've got four years to get it done."
Caron has served on the city council since 2006. In that time, she said she's most proud of the investments they've made in the downtown area, including the Market Square and the Baker District. Downer added their work around making "the city more inclusive" has been one of her biggest accomplishments for the last term.
"I just want to thank our Ward 5 residents for their continued support," she said. "One of the things I'm most proud of as a councillor is staying connected to the community, and I think our success has demonstrated that we've been able to do that. We don't just show up at elections, we show up."
