UPDATE: 58-year-old man was airlifted to hospital following Wednesday downtown crash

The incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. Wednesday on Quebec Street, just east of Norfolk Street.

(UPDATE: 12:44 p.m. Thursday. Ornge Air Ambulance reports the man was taken to Hamilton General Hospital with critical injuries.)

A 58-year-old Guelph man was was airlifted to a Hamilton trauma centre Wednesday as a result of the crash on Quebec Street.

Guelph Police say the condition of the man, who had to be extracated from the vehicle by the Guelph Fire Department, is not  known.

A construction worker at the scene of the crash received minor injuries to their leg and arm when the car crashed into a metal fence protecting the site.

The incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. Wednesday on Quebec Street, just east of Norfolk Street.

Police say a 2018 Honda FIT was travelling east on Paisley Street at a high rate of speed when it went out of control as it passed through the Norfolk Street intersection then crashed into a small construction site outside a Quebec Street store, hitting a metal fence then a metal gate post, which caused the vehicle to roll over.

The vehicle continued and struck a second metal gate post before coming to rest against a store, facing the same direction it had been travelling, with its roof crushed, while sitting on its side.

Ornge Air Ambulance was called and landed at Exhibition Park.
