A Guelph learn-to-run group geared towards women dealing with mental health issues is adding to its offerings this fall.

The group launches its second year of programming on Sept. 25 and has now added a daytime running group and a walking group.

"Harnessing the power of peer support and outdoor activity, Up and Running is a friendly learn-to-run program for women with mild to moderate depression and/or anxiety," says Shirley Hunt, one of the founders of Up and Running in a news release.

Volunteer-based and not-for-profit, this eight-week program is open to women of all fitness levels, and is intended to be an introduction to running.

Created as a companion to other treatments, Up and Running aims to provide a new tool for people managing their mental health, and the comfort of being part of a community of women who have had similar experiences. The women in the group steer the discussion and support each other as they experience the benefits of outdoor exercise together.
