City officials have cancelled the construction contract for a downtown pedestrian bridge in the wake of “unforeseen challenges.”
In a post on the city’s website, officials announced plans to build a bridge connecting The Ward with downtown is now on hold as they consider “next steps” with the project.
“Unanticipated complexities were identified in the early stage of this phase of the project and the city has made the decision to cancel the construction contract in order to assess identified challenges and avoid further delays and increased costs on the project,” states the post.
The construction contract was awarded early this year, with the project initially expected to take shape beginning this past August. Construction was anticipated to continue through to next fall.
In addition to the bridge, the project was to include a multi-use path on the east side of the bridge beside the Guelph Junction Railway line to Arthur Street South.
“The city is in the process of evaluating next steps and will share more information on the future status of this initiative to enhance connectivity to the downtown core in the coming months,” the post adds.
