The Norwich Pedestrian Bridge has reopened for public use.
On Friday, residents could be seen crossing the foot bridge over the Speed River to access services in Downtown Guelph.
The new bridge, which contains the original steel beams from when it was built in 1882, opened on Thursday.
Construction on the bridge began October 19, 2020. During this time, 1.5 metre width portion of the bridge remained open for public use. This portion was then closed in the second phase of construction on April 6, 2021.
Mike Darmon, the president of Guelph Coalition for Active Transportation, says the pedestrian bridge is an ‘extremely important’ transportation link for the neighbourhood.
“It connects not only the neighbourhoods but also is an alternative route from our Trans Canada trail to Arthur street and beyond,” said Darmon in an email.
“We are hoping that the City will also move the current crosswalk further up Eramosa road to the Arthur Eramosa location as it would then provide pedestrians and cyclists with a safer Trans Canada Trail crossing of Eramosa Road.”
