Mayor Cam Guthrie announced Friday that he wants free bus rides for high school students and children under 13.
Speaking at the annual State of the City address, he said the plan will be brought to council shortly.
"I will be introducing a motion shortly to council to get us moving (that's a pun intended) on free transit for all high school students and children under 13 in the City of Guelph," the mayor told roughly 250 business and community leaders at the breakfast event held at the Delta Hotel.
"This will be a game changer for families and for improving options for students to get to jobs, school, to volunteer opportunities and extra curricular activities. It will also introduce them to public transit sooner — and there is ample evidence that this leads to more transit use down the road into adulthood," Guthrie said.
Details of the plan, including the exact timeline, were not revealed.
