NEWS RELEASE
GUELPH YOUTH MUSIC CENTRE

The Guelph Youth Music Centre (GYMC)’s Knightsfest medieval festival event has been cancelled for 2018. The interactive event, scheduled for Family Day, Feb. 19 has lost its key sponsor.
“This has been an extremely popular Family Day event,” commented Gabriella Currie-Ziegler, executive director of the Guelph Youth Music Centre. “The medieval theme has won over many children, youth and their families for the past two years. We have been extremely fortunate to have had this wonderful day-long event sponsored, but this year the funding didn’t come through. We are very disappointed to have to cancel.”
The free event was launched on Family Day in 2016 and offered family fun, while learning about the Medieval and Renaissance eras through music, costumed demonstrations, interactive games and activities, armour workshops and brass rubbings. Attendance grew from 350 participants in 2016 to 800 in 2017. Currie-Ziegler had hoped to see even more families attend in 2018.
“When that many people come through your door, you know you’re filling a need in your community. Our goal from the beginning was to provide a free event that was both fun and educational for the whole family,” commented Currie-Ziegler.
“But we’re not giving up. We are optimistic that we will find support for this event and bring it back next year. In fact, we have everything in place for this year and still hold out hope for an angel sponsor to appear any minute.”
Established in 1992, the GYMC is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to education, enrichment and fostering the development of youth through music and the arts.
The GYMC continues to respond to a need in the community. Year after year, the centre offers a variety of arts programs, as well as affordable community space to more than 18,000 youth, adults and seniors.
The GYMC acknowledges and facilitates the efforts of hundreds of community leaders who selflessly mentor and encourage Guelph’s youth, as well as create programs for adults and seniors.
Among these programs are opportunities and methods only available at the GYMC. For more information visit gymc.ca or call 519-837-1119.
