Socktober is here and is ready for people to donate their new and gently used socks so this winter people can wear them.

The goal set by the Helper Bees Program from the Church of the Apostles, is to collect 5,000 pairs of socks this month.

Socks in need are new socks, gently used socks, children’s socks and dress socks. In the winter the socks will be given out on Saturdays downtown through Rachel’s Saturday Table. Her table gives out free meals, hygiene products and clothing at the corner of Wyndham Street and Woolwich Street on Saturdays.

“Warm clothing is always needed for our guests but easily the most needed articles of clothing are socks,” said Rachel Wilson, program coordinator, in a press release. “As winter approaches, the need for socks becomes even more urgent for those experiencing homelessness. As the temperatures plummet, frostbite becomes a real threat. A simple pair of socks can offer critical protection, preventing the cold from turning into a life-threatening condition.”

The reason why 5,000 socks are needed is because the most vulnerable in Guelph may lack access to laundry facilities or money to wash clothes, continued in the release. When socks become worn and unwearable, a clear pair of socks may have a positive impact on someone’s well being.

“The success of the program is the result of the community coming together to support this worthy cause. Our sense is that everyone in Guelph can relate to having cold feet in the winter and experiencing the difference that putting on a pair of warm dry socks can make,” said John Dennis, Helper Bees coordinator, in a release. “We are very hopeful that we will reach our target of 5,000 pairs of socks collected.”
