Guelph's Last Minute Shopping Market offers chance for unique gifts and food

Over 40 local vendors will sell their one-of-a-kind items and local food at the Friday event

The Last Minute Shopping Market is proof that it’s never too late to find a unique gift for someone for Christmas.

The market, hosted by the Guelph Tool Library, takes place Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the old Tytler Public School at 131 Ontario St. in The Ward neighbourhood.

Organizer Susan Carey said over 40 vendors have registered to take part in the event.

“We never even put out a call for vendors, it was just word-of-mouth, Kijiji and our Facebook page,” Carey said.

“I think there’s a bit of a growth in cottage industry, people doing value-added work at home,” Carey said.

Vendors range from local food producers to one-of-a-kind crafts, including t-shirts, macramé, wooden toys, jewlery, essential oils and recycled goods.  And even “I♥THE WARD” shopping bags.

“We focus on local producers and local growers. We don’t have any re-sellers or franchises,” Carey said. “We know all those people are out there and we really want to support the local economy.

Having an affordable and accessible place to sell those goods and reach an audience can often be difficult for the cottage industry types, Carey said.

“What people need when they’re knitting mittens out of old wool sweaters in the corner of their bedroom is a market, access to a market. They can make all that stuff and source all the materials, but selling it can be the hard part.”

The market is free and open to all.
