Guelph Tool Library is looking for 25 donated laptops to refurbish and distribute to community members in need.

A local initiative aims to put refurbished computers in the hands of people who otherwise wouldn’t have access to them.

Spearheaded by the Guelph Tool Library, the effort is called the Circular Computer Project.

“We have been working with businesses for the last year to support the Guelph-Wellington Digital Equity Coalition, which has allowed us to refurbish laptops to be distributed by community partners to individuals who lack access to tech devices,” spokesperson Steph Clarke said in a news release. “This year, for Waste Reduction Week … we will be accepting laptops from individuals on a case-by-case basis.”

The goal is to collect 25 laptops to be refurbished and handed out.

Waste Reduction Week runs from Oct. 16 to 21 and is part of Circular Economy Month in Canada.

In partnership with the City of Guelph and Reimagine Food, Guelph Tool Library will host a variety of other events to mark the occasion, including a clothing swap, a free community meal, a documentary film screening and a repair cafe, the latter of which was held Oct. 14.

The scheduled of events includes:

Oct. 18 - Beginners Guide to Composting (virtual) 7 p.m. - 8 p.m.
